1. GMP-CERTIFIED MANUFACTURING

Good manufacturing practices (GMP) certification of a manufacturing plant is an excellent marker of quality. True high quality nutritional supplements are manufactured in facilities inspected and certified by key organizations that may include:
      • National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA)
      • National Sanitation Foundation (NSF International)
      • Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia (TGA)

GMP certification is not free. In fact it’s very expensive to implement – which is why many nutritional supplement manufacturers do not have these types of GMP certificates. But without actual GMP certification, you cannot be sure if they are adhering to GMP requirements.

2. COMPREHENSIVE SCIENTIFIC EVALUATION OF INGREDIENTS

Ingredient selection makes the biggest difference in quality of the final product form. Without quality ingredients, even the best scientific formula won’t live up to its health-promoting potential.

There are significant quality differences in individual ingredients, and bargain nutritional supplements are often made with low cost ingredients. With many nutrients, low cost means a form or type of nutrient that does not have the potential to perform as it could in its most efficacious form. Safety and/or effectiveness may be at risk with cheaper ingredients.

3. COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY REVIEWS

Comprehensive safety reviews of ingredients are also essential to high quality nutritional supplements.

Low cost suppliers often don’t spend the time or money to conduct adequate literature reviews for safety, or devote qualified professionals to review this literature. This partly explains how they can supply their products at a lower cost.

Metagenics has dedicated scientific professionals, supported by a medical information center and research staff, to conduct literature reviews of ingredients – before a formula is ever developed – to assure safety for your patients.

4.  HUMAN CLINICAL EVALUATIONS

Human clinical evaluations are best for supporting the potential effectiveness of nutritional products. The ultimate test of quality is effectiveness and safety, which can be assessed in human clinical studies. These clinical evaluations also help determine if products produce adverse taste or tolerance concerns.

In the past 23 years, Metagenics has sponsored more than 50 human clinical trials and university studies, and over 200 articles from Metagenics’ scientists and clinicians have appeared in medical science journals. Moreover, each year more than 50 individual case management studies are conducted at the Functional Medicine Research Center (FMRC) utilizing Metagenics formulas.

5. SCIENTIFIC STAFF AND FACILITIES

Sophisticated scientific analysis is required to identify the quality difference, which requires a high-tech laboratory for such comprehensive scientific evaluation. But few companies have devoted the resources necessary to facilitate such testing.

Metagenics has on-site laboratories – such as those housed in our MetaProteomics Nutrigenomics Research Center – to conduct evaluations using the latest technology available in nutritional health sciences so that our industry-leading formulas contain only the best quality ingredients.

An advanced scientific staff and sophisticated research facilities are necessary to achieve true quality. Time-consuming, detailed work is required to help support the safety and effectiveness of nutritional products for your patients – which isn’t possible without a competent and dedicated scientific staff. Very few companies allocate the resources for an in-house staff or state-of-the-art facilities to conduct research.

Multiple scientific disciplines are required for thorough analyses of products and ingredients – genomics, proteomics, molecular biology, nutritional biochemistry, ethnobotany, food technology, formulation chemistry, and clinical research. Metagenics’ competent and committed scientific staff include MDs, PhDs, RNs, and more. Complementing this staff is the MetaProteomics Nutrigenomics Research Center, which houses a cell culture lab, a plant and food chemistry lab, a radiochemical analysis lab, an analytical instrument lab, and a molecular biology lab. The goal of these labs is not only to identify quality ingredients but also to test them for their ability to modify cellular function related to various physiological processes, helping people achieve their genetic potential through nutrition.
